New Home Journey: From Key Collection to Move-In (Singapore Guide)
🏡 1. Key Collection
Collect keys from the Housing & Development Board (for BTO/resale HDB) or developer (for condo)
Do a quick check: keys, defect list, and documents
You’ll usually receive: main door keys, mailbox keys, floor plan, and manuals
🚪 2. First Entry (Open Door / 入门)
Choose a simple auspicious date/time (if you follow feng shui)
Enter the house for the first time with positive intention
Light up the space (switch on lights, open windows)
Some people bring symbolic items (e.g., rice, salt, pineapple 🍍 for “huat”)
We also recommend a simple energy cleansing
👉 This step is about activating the space, not staying yet
🔍 3. Defect Check (VERY important)
Inspect walls, flooring, doors, plumbing, and electrical points
Submit defects within the given timeline (usually 7–30 days)
For condo: arrange inspection with the developer
For HDB: submit via the HDB portal
🛠 4. Renovation Planning
Engage an interior designer or contractor
Confirm layout, carpentry, electrical works, and hacking (if any)
Apply for permits (especially for HDB—strict regulations apply)
Typical planning timeline: 2–6 weeks
🔨 5. Renovation Work Starts
Sequence: hacking → wet works → electrical → carpentry → painting → installation
Timeline:
Simple renovation: ~4–6 weeks
Full renovation: ~8–12 weeks
If you follow feng shui, hacking is usually done on an auspicious date
🧹 6. Pre-Move-In Preparation
Deep cleaning after renovation
Install appliances (fridge, washer, lights, curtains)
Optional: space cleansing or energy reset
🚚 7. Move-In (入伙)
Choose a good date/time (if you follow feng shui)
Move essential items first (e.g., bed, stove, rice)
First night staying = officially “occupied”
🧧 8. Post Move-In (Optional Traditions)
Housewarming (invite friends and family)
Simple blessing or prayer
Gradually settle into your new routine
